BLACKBERRY OS 7 PHONE REVIEW

BLACKBERRY OS 7 PHONE REVIEW

Since OS 7 isn't compatible with older devices, the leaked ROM can’t be installed on any current BlackBerry device. We’ll have to wait for the Curve 9350/Curve 9370 (those are Sedona and Apollo respectively) to come out to see how the new OS handles without a touchscreen.

Note that the only BlackBerry OS 7 devices that are currently official use the touchscreen/portrait QWERTY combo, so their UI and the one on the Curve isn't the same.

Three video tutorials (at the bottom of this article) were extracted from the ROM (they were intended as on-device tutorials). They show how to use the OS with the optical trackpad and the QWERTY keyboard. There’s a fourth video that shows how to insert SIM and microSD cards but we’ll skip that as it’s hardly interesting.

The ROM is for the T-Mobile version of the BlackBerry Curve, though other versions shouldn’t be very different.

BLACKBERRY CURVE 8520 NEW PHONE REVIEW

BLACKBERRY CURVE 8520 NEW PHONE REVIEW
Specswise the BlackBerry Curve 8520 fares decently with the missing 3G connectivity being the only major letdown.

The QWERTY-enabled 8520 packs a 65K-color landscape QVGA TFT display. It has quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE support as well as Wi-Fi connectivity. A 2 megapixel snapper, Bluetooth and USB complete the list of noteworthy features.

As we already wrote the handset will be available through T-Mobile, starting from August 5. Vodafone UK should also be getting it soon. Unfortunately there is still no information regarding its pricing or its eventual availability with other carriers.

BLACKBERRY CURVE 3G 9300 NEW PHONE REVIEW

BLACKBERRY CURVE 3G 9300 NEW PHONE REVIEW
Apart from the HSDPA-support, there are only a few other differences between the Curve 3G 9300 and the elderly Curve 8520. The newly introduced smartphone is said to be BlackBeryy 6 ready (the update from ver. 5 to ver. 6 should become available in the coming months).

On top of that it will also feature a built-in GPS receiver and there will be support for Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, too (the BlackBerry Curve 8520 had no GPS receiver and came with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi).

The rest remains untouched. We find the same 256K-color QVGA display as well as an optical trackpad and a comfy QWERTY-keyboard underneath it. Like its predecessor, the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300 also packs a standard 3.5mm audio jack, dedicated music keys and a microSDHC card slot. And backstage there is the familiar 2MP fixed-focus snapper.

BLACKBERRY BOLD TOUCH 9930 NEW PHONE REVIEW

BLACKBERRY BOLD TOUCH 9930 NEW PHONE REVIEW
The folks over at Boy Genius Report have got their lucky hands on the Bold Touch 9930 and according to them the phone looks much better in person, than on the product renders, that leaked a while ago. Along with the good looks, the Bold Touch 9900 is reported to be very well-built, too.

Here are some photos of the early production unit. Notice the carbon back battery cover, which seems more and more likely to replace the faux leather one RIM has been using so far.

BLACKBERRY BOLD TOUCH 9900 REVIEW

BLACKBERRY BOLD TOUCH 9900 REVIEW
if you pre-order your Bold Touch 9900 now, chances are it will be on your doorstep between the middle and the end of August. That's not too long a wait, so if you are interested, you might want to start saving.

Of course, you should be saving not for the handset itself, but for the contract accompanying it as all major UK carriers will be offering the Bold Touch 9900 UK for free. T-Mobile will require you to sign a £30.64/month contract , while on Orange, Vodafone and O2 will be charging you just over £35.We have no information of the length of the contracts yet, but 18 months for the more expensive ones and 2 years for the cheaper deal sounds like a pretty safe bet.

The only UK carrier that hasn't unveiled its Bold Touch 9900 UK contract plans is Three, but it has been confirmed that the handset will be available there, too, so we should know more soon.

The Pearl 3G supports the latest Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n standard, while the Bold 9650 relies on the previous b/g one. Still, the new Bold will be released in both GSM and CDMA versions, but the Pearl 3G won't be available for the CDMA users.

BlackBerry Bold 9650 (in CDMA obviously) will be available from Sprint USA starting next month. The Pearl 3G will hit Canada through Bell, TELUS and Rogers most probably the same time. Other market availability and pricing are yet to be announced.
